LIFE 015

A POEM about life

We view it from the unique perspective of our personal experiences

Through the gaping holes in our respective emotional fences

Through the perceived vulnerabilities of our own defences

Through the several compelling influences of our conferences

Through the unexplainable possibilities caused by our individual sciences

Through the assumed premises of indoctrinated societal inferences.

We often ponder on the reason for our existence

Constantly seeking answers that will justify our essence

Never sure of reaching the utmost heights of our competence

But still managing to pretend that we are not bothered by the uncertainty of losing our dainty planet

And the certainty that a sovereign deity created our planet.

If only we could view at a glance the entire timeline from past to future

Maybe we might have made better informative decisions in order to create a better future

Maybe we might have abused the information we had and destroyed our world as we know it

Or maybe we might have been so terrified that we do nothing and still have our world as we know it

The variables will always be endless but our choices are absolute.

A POEM about the year 2020 and the festive season

It has been a black year of grief

A white year of pain

A red year of loss

It has also been a green year of growth

A blue year of breakthrough

And a yellow year of hope

We are all survivors indeed

We were broke but still helped others in need

We were locked up but still managed to feed

We were lonely but still took heed

It has all led to the budding of many seeds

We’ll soon have so much to feed

And more to harvest than we need

May this season usher in good tidings

May this season usher in perfect timings

May this season usher in big signings

May this season usher in higher ratings

May this season usher in silver linings

May this season usher in tremendous blessings

Season’s greetings!

Literally, to forgive and forget means to stop blaming someone for something the person has done to hurt you and to stop remembering what happened but, do we ever really forget? No, I don’t think so. The deed is done. The scar has formed. The memory has already been stored in the brain. You can’t just erase all that. I think that to forgive and forget means having to suppress and dismiss any urge to retaliate based on the misdeed of an individual towards you. It also means accepting to carry the burden of pain caused by what such a person has done to you alone, without blaming the person anymore, whether they feel guilty or not. It is a really difficult decision to make and one of the most noble things anyone can do.

An apology on the other hand, is just like someone considerably unburdening themselves of the guilt they feel about something they did to hurt you. By apologising, they can get the burden off themselves and leave you no choice but to bear it alone. Initially, you both shared the burden. You had the burden of pain as the victim and the other person had the burden of guilt as the perpetrator. A perpetrator has to feel guilt before thinking of tendering an apology. Apologising means that they recognise that they have hurt you and feel guilty about whatever they did to you.

Let’s not ignore the fact that not all apologies are genuine and most are made because the other party is obligated by religion or societal norms to forgive and forget. Some people even intentionally hurt you because they already know how it would play out in the end. In the rule book, the perpetrator apologises to the victim and the victim is obligated to forgive the perpetrator simply because they have apologised. I still do not understand the logic behind that, except for the sake of inner peace and world peace.

Honestly, there is nothing fair about apologising to the victim. The only fair play is that we have all been on either side at one point or another in our lives. Even God knew we could not forget totally. He created us as intelligent beings. That is why there is a passage in the Bible that says that we should allow Him to take vengeance on our behalf. Forgiveness is a calling, not an obligation. We have to choose to forgive and not feel obligated or forced to do so.

The next time you’re about to tell someone to forgive and forget, think about these: Will you be there to work the person through their pain? If you were in their shoes, will it be fair to you? I am not against forgiveness but I’ll say that we should learn to give people time to get over whatever we have done to hurt them and not just expect them to move on immediately we apologise. Also, if someone hurt you, strive towards forgiving them for the sake of your inner peace because you are really the one suffering, not them. You unconsciously give them power over you when you keep holding a grudge against them.

Let us learn to be empathetic towards those who are hurt and bold enough to reveal their pain to us. Some scars fade in months, some take years while others never fade away. Everyone is different and we all deal with life differently, more so, most of us never get to have the same experiences. The pain of reliving unpleasant memories is hard enough. Do not make people go through the pain of loneliness and rejection simply because it’s taking them so long to let go. We all have a responsibility to protect those we care about, not only physically but emotionally as well.

A POEM about those things that make us feel alive

what is life

if not the cry of a newborn

the sound of your favourite person’s car horn

the sumptuous taste of sweet caramel popcorn

the immeasurably great potential in being freeborn

what is life

if not the ultrasound of a wanted fetus

the healing properties of the eucalyptus

an increase in social status

being the sole owner of a most sort after apparatus

completing your first self-owned business prospectus

what is life

if not making your first million

earning the first-position pedestal on the pavilion

being worth over a billion

commanding a battalion

single-handedly stopping a protest from expanding into a full-blown rebellion

winning your first medallion

these and so much more is life

A POEM about overcoming negative emotions caused by the actions of other people

I know that I am fearfully and wonderfully created

But I have never really had my beauty rated.

I know my season of redundancy is dated

But I am not exactly sure of when my recommendation is slated.

All I am sure of is that, the future, the one for which I am fated,

Will definitely get me elated.

I resigned to being an underdog

Because my enthusiasm was usually pushed under the rug.

I decided not to tug

And kept my emotions on plug.

Then, I went back to the trenches I dug

And pretended to be sipping coffee from my mug

So that I could avoid being offered a fake hug.

For my withdrawal, I had my reasons.

I had to learn a lot of lessons

By observing all their manipulation seasons.

I knew I could only succeed at that by offering myself as a sacrifice

So that I could watch right from the inside of their edifice.

Hence, I made the sacrifice.

It took years to get what I needed.

After it all ended,

I had perfected the art of keeping my emotions coded

And had a plethora of skills and virtues added.

Although, they thought they left me jaded

Because I acted as though I was gutted,

So that they don’t get my motive outwitted.

Now, I have a hopeful new song

Different from that of hopelessness I had earlier sung,

That had me drunk

With all the tears in my trunk.

I have a dream

That one day, my fate will become everyone’s dream.

What a world!

Where the bold get accused of coveting gold

Where the old are left out in the cold

Where you’re never told before being sold

Where you must hold a particular standard and never fold

Where your mould will most certainly, eventually grow mold.

It’s always a long and rigorous road

No matter how light your load

Even if you hop like a toad

You’ll still arrive at your own crossroad.

You’ve got to learn to upload

Only what you’ll need to download

In order to maximize your payload.

Then there’s the illusion of living together in love and harmony

They call it matrimony

It usually starts with a merry ceremony

Some end up as a testimony

Some end up with alimony

You can’t even judge most for their acrimony

After hearing their story about what led to disharmony.

They say only the paranoid survive;

Who then will help to revive

What was lost in the quest for survival?

What kind of world do we hope to derive

If there’s no one to drive home a revival?

Oh, what a world!

If you think you have an opinion

And you feel the need for communion

Do not speak like you have dominion

No one likes to feel inferior in a union

Secretly cutting onions

Because you constantly reject their opinions

Poem: A Resolution or not

It’s the beginning of a decade

One we aren’t yet aware of its facade

One we’re still behind its barricade

Though we have a glimpse of its arcade

We still can’t tell how it’ll cascade
